At the workshop, discussion sessions were held to generate strategies with a goal of fostering a wider global market for value-added propolis products. The workshop was organized by the World Propolis Science Forum (chairman Lee Seung-Wan) and sponsored by the Special Sector R&D Center. A network of experts worked hard to promote Daejeon into a global market while conducting research and marketing in a concerted effort.
Deajeon city is the site where the beekeepers around the world will gather to celebrate international apicultural conference Apimondia 2015 expecting to welcome about 10,000 people. This congress will help create an opportunity of dominating the market with cutting-edge technology whereby setting an example of a global-market enterprise contributing to a healthier future of the world. Throughout the workshop, dissertation presentations and discussions were lively held by experts with varied backgrounds in industry, academia and research.
World’s beekeeping industries increase their competiveness in propolis by differentiating extracting methods, retailing, and processing technology. Developing non-alcohol and water-soluble propolis technology they also try to explore new markets in order to boost declining beekeeping industry. Boosted by Daejeon’s host to Apimondia 2015, Korean propolis products can have the best opportunities of advancing to the world stage.
“Infrastructure Project for Propolis Industrial Globalization”

Kim Ha-Dong, executive director at the Dae Jeon Techno-Park Bio Center gave a presentation under the title of “Infrastructure Project for Propolis Industrial Global.” He stated that in the race against other competitors, a renewed effort should be focused on a specific area of non-alcohol, water-soluble propolis R&D (technology, development, business) in a great variety of applications, including medicine, cosmetics, functional health foods, natural antibiotics for the livestock. He added that it is forecast the market size for propolis should grow to over 300 billion won by 2015.
Propolis International Standardization promoted by WPSF will pave the way for building up global marketing infrastructure. If Korea took this initiative of propolis standardization, it would play a pivotal role in producing world-class propolis products. He also suggested that the government R&D cooperative project be organized by the Daejeon Techno-Park. The goal of R&D project is to build foreign and domestic propolis industrial clusters and to provide the roadmap for the role of a regional hub.
After that, with Professor Jin Young-Soo (Seoul Asan Medical Center) as mediator, discussion was held on propolos by a panel of experts from industry, academia, and research including Professor Lee Bong-Ho (Hanbat National University), Dr. Lim Chang-Man ( Daedeok Innopolis), Director Heo Yong-Gap (Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd, Propolis Research Center).

In the study and research of natural products such as propolis, its international standardization process is extremely important. Considering how significant role a single compound can play in a variety of different applications, it is of utmost importance to define the identities of chemical structures and contents of propolis by way of separate purification process. It was suggested that propolis natural compound bank be set up for sustainable growth and continuing development.
To find a new momentum for propolis, new ideas should be explored including modifying compounds through active microbial cultures, enzyme treatment and so on, producing complex compounds by combining two functional compounds, and utilizing brand-new analysis methods in conducting experimentation. A network of professionals or connected communities should be desirable befitting the age of collective intelligence to accomplish this complicated yet demanding process of research and development.

The integration of beekeeping industry and high-tech industry should provide an opportunity for industrial growth. Yet continuing R&D and various marketing strategies should be accompanied in tandem.
A win-win strategy in collaboration with multinational corporations and marketing strategies tailored to varied consumer needs in the domestic market are needed for the global propolis industry development. By consulting professional agency, the ability to objectively analyze rapidly changing market conditions and latest technology is needed. To further push for international standardization, different levels of participation from government, local community, and the media among many others is also needed.

At present, propolis is being studied in a wide variety of applications, including functional health foods, cosmetics, food additives, commodities, clothes, medicines for animals. However some downsides such as lack of technology in extracting process, odor, stickiness, color and so on, may present a barrier for its potentially broad scope of utilization despite its excellent effects. A new way of processing technology to address problems mentioned above is in dire need.
As propolis is a complex natural product with a diversity of chemical structures and biological activities, by way of adopting standardization, it is possible for us to choose and develop more efficient use of beneficial properties of propolis thereby producing relevantly functional and customized products tailored to the needs of customers.
Water-Soluble Propolis Effective in Prevention of Gastritis

Professor Park Geon-Young made a presentation on the recently published research on propolis. It was found that propolis was more effective in prevention of gastritis than the widely used therapeutic medicine called ‘omeprazole.’ Inha University Hospital [State Appointed Assessment & Validation Center for Digestive Diseases related pharmaceuticals] (Lee Don-Haeng, executive director) had recently conducted this scientific research titled the “proplis use in prevention of gastritis.”
To study the effects of propolis extract on preventing stomach ulcers on mice, four different kinds of propolis extracts were used for one week at various levels of concentration. Four different propolis products include Robongbang propolis which is water-soluble, Robongbang propolis capsule which is fat-soluble, Chinese-made propolis which is ethanol extract and etc. HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers were inflicted on the lab mice, and then the severity of stomach ulcers was compared after being treated with either omeprazole or propolis. Among the test data gathered, ‘Robongbang Water-Soluble Propolis’ now being under development and production by Seoul Propolis Co. & Ltd was proved to be 100% effective in suppressing gastric ulcers in mice even at low concentration whereas omeprazole was 97.8% effective. Therefore it was confirmed with positive scientific evidence that ‘Robongbang water-soluble propolis’ with natural antibiotic properties is more effective in treating ulcers than the widely used medicine omeprazole.
Korea Feed Market Status & Alternative Natural Antibiotic Market

After lunch, Hong Seok-Man team leader (Woosung Feed Laboratory) gave a presentation on the subject of “Korea’s animal feed market status & natural alternative to antibiotics market.”
For Agriculture & Forestry industries, rice harvest secures the top spot as #1. However the percent of total crop production only reaches 15.6% whereas livestock markets account for more than 40% with pigs as #2, cows #3, chickens #4, milk #5, eggs #6, ducks #7 and so on. Ninety-five percent of all feed ingredients used domestically were imported from overseas thereby causing a huge influence on the domestic feed markets.
Mixed-feed domestic markets 2010 with a size of 9 trillion won are dominated by the top 10 companies whereas small and mid-sized firms occupy feed additives market with 900 billion won and antibiotic additives market with 300 billion won. Effective July 1st, 2011, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries banned the use of antibiotics- antimicrobials on the production of animal feeds for livestock.
An array of substances such as organic acids, probiotics, medium-chain fatty acids, enzymes, plant extracts, agents to boost the immune system among others have been commonly used as substitutes for antibiotics in animal feed. Since there is no stand-out product, a categorical ban of all types of substitutes for antibiotics and antimicrobials including propolis has been enforced at present.
Widely used substances to substitute potentially harmful antibiotics include organic acids, probiotics, medium-chain fatty acids, enzymes, plant extracts, immunity boosters and so on. Since there are no outstanding sellers among them, the promotion & marketing of propolis as natural antibiotics best ensures the opening-up of big Blue Ocean into feed additives & antibiotics substitutes markets
Kwon Myung-Sang, chief manger (Korea Institute of Toxicology), who had conducted research on different kinds of livestock, made a presentation on the subject of “Development of eco-friendly feed for livestock & development of natural antibiotics using propolis for disease-free livestock “
He stated that the best way to produce clean & safe livestock is to minimize the use of existing antibiotic substances and to select medicine without cross-contamination. To this effect, he started research in which he used propolis as feed additives in animal. The compound called the flavonoid in propolis is well known for its antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.
Through research findings, it was proved that propolis effectively prevents weight gain, increase digestibility and inhibit manure odor when fed to pigs. Another research data was released that propolis was effectively used in prevention of diarrhea in piglets when added to the feed. When compared to other natural antibiotics, propolis was proved to be better in its effects. Therefore it is possible to produce wellbeing livestock products because the use of propolis reduces costs and can lessen the economic costs brought on by the introduction of HACCP system.
In the wake of the opening of livestock import, the BRAND of wellbeing products can enhance its competitiveness. Furthermore a new synergy effect can be created due to its immunity boosting effects against livestock diseases and natural antibiotic properties plus antioxidant properties.
